We are 2 1/2 years into the life of CDTH and taking serious stock of where we want to be after our 5 year mark. I think we are are at a crucial inflection point:
We are about to hire about 10 people who will be working across teams and across projects, exhibiting the matrixed organization we are becoming
The initial phase of CDTH has been capacity building and putting in place foundational elements we can build on towards a larger vision.
What we need to do in the next few months is paint a future vision for the digital transformation of health in our ecosystem that is also a global exemplar AND invent techniques to translate that vision into reality. As you know, the Executive Team is addressing these points through RIC Innovation by Design workshops and through Leadership training. The groundwork is taping shape, and we will be providing opportunities for all of you to contribute to our evolving vision and plan. Two models that drove our thinking in the last few weeks were particularly useful in my mind.
1. Force Field Model
What are the driving forces towards success of our strategy and what are the restraining forces we need to address? That is the question we worked through in last week's leadership training, using the Force Field Model. The model is based on the idea that if one can identify and determine the potency of forces, then it is possible to know the forces that need to be diminished or strengthened to bring about change. I would love your input to add to ours - please fill out this survey to share your thoughts.
2. SWOT Strategic Direction Planner
The Innovation by Design program led by RIC challenged us to think about the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats for our vision, and many of the same issues rose to the surface. Although I've filled out SWOT analyses before, I really liked their SWOT and Strategic Planning Template that helps you map out a plan of action relating SW to OT. Several unspoken issues that appeared in our planner that can now become explicit parts of our strategy, especially in relation to threats and weaknesses.
On a personal note, music has been on my mind and I've been making some plans:
The Melbourne Jazz Festival is coming up, and I am going to see B&K. Kate (K) is from Adelaide, and Brett (B) is from my previous home of Pittsburgh. Brett was a prodigy that joined the same jazz piano program my son was in at Duquesne University, and he was widely respected and envied by all other students. B&K live in Melbourne now.
I created a new playlist of my favorite California alternative bands from the 80's--nothing like some fast punk music to cheer you up on a gray day! Let me know if you want me to share it with you. Two of the bands I included are coming to Melbourne in February: Social Distortion and Bad Religion (whose main singer is also an evolutionary biology professor). When X comes, I'll let you know, because they top the list of the LA punk scene.
Many of you know Archie Roach recently died. I re-watched Wash my Soul in the River's Flow and listened to the soundtrack. It is a gorgeous, rich film that is, as the website says
