CDTH 2.0

In staff meeting last week, we introduced our initial vision for the next iteration of the Centre for Digital Health (CDTH) 2.0. CDTH 1.0 is all about capacity building--putting in place the foundational elements needed to embark on the digital transformation of health. CDTH 2.0 is focused on leveraging those elements with partner healthcare organizations in making that transformation real through embedded Learning Health System Innovation Hubs.

As a reminder, we have three pillars of work and one cross-functional workstream:

In spite of being a very small team still, we have made some really good progress in building foundational blocks:

Meredith created a rough sketch of an informatics-powered LHS that we want to bring to life through partnerships with healthcare organizations using LHS Innovation Hubs. The outer circle represents the infrastructure and processes that we are building to embark on LHS projects. Workforce education will need to be woven through all parts of this work. In the Innovation By Design program led by RIC, we are working on the specific "why" of LHS Innovation Hubs for different audiences (industry, government, etc.) to craft major funding bids in the near future. The diagram gives a high-level description of the "what." We will need all of your help in thinking through the "who" and the "how." Where do you see yourself in this vision? Where do we start? What are the best exemplar projects to demonstrate the power of an informatics-powered LHS?

This vision is not only the future of our Centre but is also woven into the MDHS Advancing Health 2030 strategic plan (in the Place strategy and as a strategic initiative linked to digital care and navigation centres). That means these ideas are being included in MDHS activities aimed at obtaining philanthropic support and seeking large scale funding. Additionally, this evolving vision will guide our current decisions and prioritization efforts as we consistently ask ourselves how to best move towards our longer-term vision. Looking forward to going on this journey with all of you.

Regional Linguistic Quirks: I was really surprised to see the complete lack of Oxford commas in Australia. In my experience in the US, the use of the comma before the last item in a list depends on the strong opinions of the writers. I, as you may have noticed, am a big believer in the Oxford comma, because it provides precision--no need to go back and try to disambiguate the meaning based on context without the help of the punctuation. The UK Health Ministry has issued a directive to not use the Oxford comma. Ironically, it is seen in the UK as an Americanism.
